Debórah Dwork is the founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, Graduate Center — CUNY. Pathbreaking in her early oral recording of Holocaust survivors, Debórah weaves their narratives into the history she writes. Her award-winning books include Children With A Star; Flight from the Reich; Auschwitz; and Holocaust. Most recently, Saints and Liars: The Story of Americans Who Saved Refugees from the Nazis (2025), was selected by Library Journal as a Stellar Book for 2025 and was chosen a National Jewish Book Award Finalist. Debórah is also a leading authority on university education in this field: she envisioned and actualized the first doctoral program specifically in Holocaust History and Genocide Studies. Recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award in Holocaust Studies (2024) from the Holocaust Educational Foundation, the Annetje Fels-Kupferschmidt Award (2022) bestowed by the Dutch Auschwitz Committee, and the International Network of Genocide Scholars Lifetime Achievement Award (2020), Debórah was honored to serve as Senior Scholar-in-Residence at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and as a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and an ACLS Fellow.
